Famous Door County Cherries
Door County is well known for the thousands of acres of cherry trees throughout the county. Travelers flock to the county in May to witness hillsides of beautiful white cherry blossoms. Mid-July is time for cherry harvesting. At Wienke's Market you'll be able to find already picked cherries available by the quart or pail. Dried, canned and frozen are available all year 'round. But don't forget Wienke's Market Door County Cherry Pies, cherry muffins, cherry scones, cherry jams, and cherry pie filling. - Wisconsin Ranks fourth in producing cherries in the US, and all of those are grown in Door County!
- There are about 7,000 cherries on an average tart cherry tree (depending on age of tree, weather, etc), and it takes about 250 cherries to make a cherry pie, so each tree has a potential producing enough cherries for 28 pies!
- The average US citizen consumes about one pound of tart cherries per year. That's more than 260 million pounds per year.
